Families can enjoy cheaper days out this summer after prices were reduced at two popular Middlesbrough attractions thanks to a new, government-backed scheme.
Admission charges at Newham Grange Farm and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum will be reduced throughout the summer holidays.
Middlesbrough Council has passed on the full benefit of a temporary VAT reduction as part of the government’s Summer Savings scheme, which runs until Monday, September 1.
The initiative temporarily reduces VAT from 20% to 5% on eligible family attractions, with the Council funding further reductions to assure affordability for families
The move to make two of Middlesbrough’s cultural venues more affordable comes as the town readies its bid to become UK City of Culture 2029.
Mayor Chris Cooke said: “The school holidays can be an expensive time for families, so we’re pleased to pass these savings straight on to families.
“We want as many people as possible to enjoy everything Middlesbrough has to offer.
“Whether it’s meeting the animals at Newham Grange Farm or discovering the fascinating story of Captain Cook, these attractions offer great days out right on our doorstep.
“I’d encourage families to make the most of these reduced prices while the Summer Savings scheme is running.”
Newham Grange Farm is one of Middlesbrough’s most popular attractions and will see prices drop from £5.80 to £5 for adults and from £4.90 to £4 for children.
A family ticket was £19.50 and will now be priced at £15 for two adults and two children or one adult and three children.
Visitors can meet a wide range of farm animals as well as enjoy play areas and seasonal activities throughout the year.
Special themed events will also be held across the summer break featuring Bluey, Peppa Pig, the Hartlepool Bubble Man, a Princess Day with Elsa and Anna, Spiderman and Paw Patrol characters. Captain Cook Birthplace Museum tells the story of Marton-born James Cook, one of the world’s greatest explorers and the town’s greatest sons.
The newly revamped museum features interactive displays, family activities and a brand-new play area.
Prices will reduce to £10 for a family ticket – down from £14.10 for two adults and two children or £13 for one adult and three children before the promotion.
Single adult tickets have dropped to £4.20 and to £3.30 for children and concessions.
That will allow for unlimited admissions until August 30 at the museum, which will be open during the summer holidays every Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.
Visitors are encouraged to check opening times at both venues and plan their visit before travelling.
